The Super Soaker 40 was among the last of the classic Super Soakers to be released.  You can tell this just by looking at the design, as the external design (besides the reservoir and barrel) closely resemble that of the XP 75, XP 150, and other first generation XPs.  That's not to say that the design is as rugged as XP soakers, but it is far more rugged than most classics.  I purchased my 40 in 2001 when it was rereleased and it has yet to break on me.  I've used it as my side arm in every war since V3.  That in itself should say alot about this gun.  Oh yeah, I purchased it for $5.  I have to say that's the best $5 I've ever spent on a soaker.  That's $2-$7 cheaper than other guns its size (ie Max D 3000, Liquidator, etc.).
Now, on to performance.  The SS 40 gets its power from pumping air into the reservoir (aka pressurized reservoir technology), so it's a good idea to only fill it up about 75% full.  Like all classics the initial burst of water coming out of the nozzle is very powerful and has a sharp sting to it.  After the first second or so the power drops to a little
below standard air pressure (Max D) levels.  The nozzle itself was measured at 1mm, or .53x that of an XP 70's nozzle.  Although this might appear to be on the small side it's the exact same size nozzle that's featured on the XP 20, XP 220, XP 40 (presumably), and XP 240.  I prefer my SS 40 over my XP 20 and XP 220, but I do think my XP 240 (now broken) was a little better.  It's much easier to make a holster for an SS 40 than it is for an XP 240 though.

Pros: Lightweight, very inexpensive, good capacity and shot time.

Cons: Low powered for its size (ie XP 240, Max D 3000, Liquidator etc.)
